The Internetworked Systems Lab (InterSys) is the sole laboratory of the Software Division of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, in Democritus University of Thrace. It is directed by Prof. V. Tsaoussidis and consists of 20 members; its total funding exceeds 3 million Euros. It is located in Xanthi, Greece, in an area of 300m2, including facilities in Kimmeria and City Center. The research agenda of the InterSys Lab spans across several networking layers, including transport, network, link and middleware. Research topics include Delay-tolerant Networking (DTN), design and evaluation of transport protocols, design and evaluation of routing and transport for disruptive networks, mechanisms for quality of service, congestion control and reliability. The research interests of the Lab also include security, algorithms, programming languages, and information retrieval. Applications that may benefit from our research effort include energy-saving protocols and mobile devices, multimedia communications, space communications, Cloud and Web Computing, High Performance Internetworked Systems, and the Internet. Within this context, the Lab accommodates 5 research units:

Currently, the lab undertook also the construction of a Testbed for the European Space Agency, the Construction of Space Data Routers as well as the establishment of Space Internetworking Center. Some of the Lab's well-known results include "ESA DTN Testbed", "TCP-Probing", "TCP-Real", "Non-Congestive Queuing", "AIMD-FC", "AIRA", etc.
